Regularly supplemented with artefacts unearthed during digs in the region, the museum’s archaeological collections are grouped in the galleries on the basement level: the former convent’s wine cellar is devoted to prehistory, protohistory and the Merovingian period while the adjoining space is given over to the Roman period. The collections offer a nearly complete overview of the early development of human society, through numerous objects used in everyday life or funerary rites, most of which were discovered in the northern half of the Haut-Rhin.
