Works from the 19th century are currently displayed on the first floor of the museum. A portion of the basement is devoted to 20th-century art, which is subject to removal as necessary to make space for temporary exhibitions (enquire with the museum before visiting if you are especially interested in viewing these works). The expansion of the Unterlinden Museum to encompass the municipal baths will allow for the permanent display of its entire collection of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
NINETEENTH CENTURY The museum’s holdings include a large grouping of paintings relating to local history and representing various artistic currents of the 19th century, with significant space given over to miniatures, which were very fashionable prior to the invention of photography.
TWENTIETH CENTURYT The museum’s collection of 20th-century art, which has grown considerably over the years thanks to acquisitions, gifts and major allocations from the French state, is especially strong in works from 193060 by painters of the French tradition, with a special emphasis on the relations between French and German artists.
