THE CLOISTER // Art of the 15th to the 18th centuries The museum is housed on the site of the former Dominican convent of Unterlinden (“under the linden trees”). The galleries displaying the museum’s collections of art from the 15th to the 18th centuries are arrayed around the former convent’s well-preserved 13th-century cloister. The museum’s most celebrated work, the Isenheim Altarpiece, has pride of place in the convent chapel. |

MODERN ART GALLERY// Collections from the 19th and 20th centuries During the 19th century, the museum’s founders were interested in presenting the art of their time. It was perfectly natural that this section would later be expanded to include a collection of 20th-century art focusing on a number of major French trends in painting and on the group of artists referred to as the School of Paris. >> Click on the image to learn more about the museum’s modern art collection. |
