19th century

The museum’s collection of 19th-century paintings includes a group of works representing the different artistic currents having appeared in the years between the Empire and the annexation of Alsace and Moselle by Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. Alongside works bearing witness to local history, major artistic currents, such as Romanticism, are addressed. Most genres are represented in the museum’s collections, from history painting to still lifes, not to mention landscapes and portraits, including a vast collection of miniatures.
